Abdul Hadi

Eddy Mendieta (14 August 1907 – 23 June 1971), better known by the stage name Abdul Hadi or A. Hadi, was a Filipino-born Indonesian actor and singer. He is best known for his role as Norma's father in the noir Lewat Djam Malam (1954) directed by Usmar Ismail and as Hadi in the drama Tarmina (1954) directed by Lilik Sudjio for which he received Citra Award for Best Actor at the first Indonesian Film Festival in 1955. Hadi is the part of Classical Indonesian Cinema.

Early life[edit]

Hadi was born Eddy Mendieta on 14 August 1907 in Manila to a Spanish father and Filipino mother.[1] At the age of 15, he went to Iberia Light Opera Co in Manila and took a course to become an actor.[1] After passing the vocal exam, he was cast in the operetta The Merry Widow.[1]

Career[edit]

In 1934, Hadi moved to Medan and joined Miss Riboet's Orion until the Japanese occupation of the Dutch East Indies.[1] During this period, he worked at Nippon Eiga Sha.[1] In 1944, Hadi joined numerous theatrical troupes, such as Bintang Surabaya, Pantja Warna, and Bintang Timur.[1] He made his film debut in Sedap Malam (1951) as an extra, followed by a leading role in Sepanjang Malioboro (1951) alongside Titien Sumarni.[1] Hadi played a leading role alongside Netty Herawaty in Tjalon Duta (1955) and received a Citra Award for Best Actor at Indonesian Film Festival in 1955 for his role in Tarmina (1954).[1] Hadi later appeared as a supporting role in numerous films, including Dewi (1957), Djantung Hati (1961), Impian Bukit Harapan (1964), and Djampang Mentjari Naga Hitam (1968).[1] He made his last film appearance as a supporting role in Rakit (1971).[1]

Death[edit]

Hadi died at his residence in Jakarta, Indonesia, on 23 June 1971 from a heart attack at the age of 63.[1]
